About

The Locktender’s Garden at the Erie Canal Museum is representative of those that could be found at the many locks and weighlocks along the Erie Canal. These gardens grew produce, flowers, and apothecary herbs for the employees who worked tirelessly to keep these structures operating twenty-four hours a day. Created in 1971 by the Syracuse Garden Club, our garden grows many of the same plants that would have been found in those along the Canal. In 2024, we hope to increase the amount of food we are able to grow so we can share it with community members.
